"Propaganda photobooks come in all shapes, sizes and ideologies. Sometimes they tell half-truths; sometimes they lie outright; sometimes they are as factual as company reports. Gerhard Puhlmann's photographic record of East Germany's most trumpeted reconstruction initiative, whilst clearly extolling the virtues of the enterprise, is in the latter category, the most benign of propaganda books.
The Stalinallee, which was renamed the Frankfurter Allee and the Karl-Marx Allee in 1961 (when Stalin's name fell from grace), was the most important town-planning project to be carried out in East Berlin. This vast east-west boulevard, 75 to 80 metres wide, ended at the Alexanderplatz, the centre of Soviet-occupied Berlin. Designed by a team under the East German architect Heinrich Henselmann, it was an enormously ambitious scheme, the first phase of which was lovingly documented in Puhlmann's book. Not only was it regarded as a vast social housing project, but it was also an aesthetic expression of the new socialist soci-ety. It was built between 1952 and 1957 in a monumental Neo-classical style that became a model for town planning throughout East Germany, chosen in opposition to the preferred modernist public architecture of Western capitalism.
If the Stalinallee was somewhat severe, the flats were well designed - though built a little too quickly - and provided decent housing for the East Berlin population at a time when a large proportion of the city - 25 percent, rising to 80 percent in the city centre - had been destroyed or badly damaged. The associations with Stalin have not prevented them from fetching healthy prices in the current Berlin housing market, nor, following reunification, have such bulwarks of capitalism like Citibank or McDonalds been too proud to take space in this fascinating street, beautifully and exhaustively documented by Puhlmann in this book."
