Hans Richter - Filmgegner von Heute - Filmfreunde von Morgen, Hermann Reckendorf, 1929, Berlin
Hardcover, cloth bound with dust jacket.
Richter was a central figure in European and American experimental film. In this important study he reproduces photographs, stills and filmstrips from avant-garde films including Dziga Vertov's 'Man with a Movie Camera', Carl Theodor Dreyer's 'Le Passion de Jean D'Arc', and Fernand Leger and Dudley Murphy's 'Ballet Mecanique', as well as his own work. He also criticizes German and American commercial cinema for its over-reliance on star actors, excessive costumes and sets. This book was conceived in collaboration with Werner Graff as a companion volume to his Es kommt der neue fotograf! (1929), with both being issued to coincide with the Film und Foto exhibition organized by the Deutsche Werkbund in Stuttgart. Richter was in charge of the film program that ran alongside this important exhibition. (Oliver Wood)
