John Thomson & Adolphe Smith - Street Life in London with Permanent Photographic Illustrations, Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1878, London
Hardcover, privately bound.
Photographic Illustrations taken from Life Expressly for this Publication, [1877-78], thirty-six mounted Woodburytypes on thirty-six leaves, many approx. 110 x 85mm. Originally published as a monthly serial, Street Life in London was published in twelve parts. It was then published in book form in brown and variant green bindings. It is still considered a pioneering work for its use of photography as social documentation, the types represented include cabmen, street doctors, locksmiths, shoe-blacks, peddlers, etc.
“Structurally, Street Life is a combination of street portraiture … and interviews with the subjects. Thus it was the direct predecessor of the journalistic picture stories that would appear in illustrated magazines from that period onward. ... is a pioneering work of social documentation in photographs and words ... one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium's history" (Parr/Badger Vol. I)
