Philip J Brittan and Rosie Ritchie - Far Too Lovely To Return, PJB Editions, 2014, London

Softcover, hand stitched with red linen thread, edition of 100, signed and numbered, photography by Philip J Brittan and Rosie Ritchie, design by PJB Editions
„'Far Too Lovely To Return' is a book of images by Rosie Ritchie and Philip J Brittan that explores the art of perception and suggestion. Predominantly the result of darkroom adventures with chemicals and film, the images of landscapes, surfaces, buildings, and the human figure float between abstraction and representation. Exercises in process and chance, many images create visions of beauty from the mundane or ignored. The photographs rely more on evocation and atmosphere, and the use of tonal contrasts, rather than literal or narrative detail, to evoke mood and feeling.
The new format is a simplified version of the original. The size of the book and the number and sequencing of images remain the same. The book is hand bound with red linen stab stitching.
The title is derived from a poem by WG Sebald, a writer whose influential work casts a strong shadow over any photographer who is concerned with the ambiguities of memory and place.“
