There are 512 female portraits in This Face, all from the same woman named "Zi U", a sex worker who lives in Beijing.
On January 19, 2011, photographer Xu Yong stayed in a room next to Zi U's workplace and spent a whole day - from the time Zi U got up and work until the end of the day - taking close-up shots of her face at different times of the day. Together with Zi U's diary on that day, Xu recorded her life and moods for that day.
This Face is Xu Yong's another collaboration with a sex worker after Solution Scheme(2007). These two project both make it possible for readers to get a glimpse of the real situations sex workers are facing in China. While flipping the pages of Zi U's private and working lives, we could also see how a Chinese woman observed and responded to the world. The face of Zi U not only mirrors the most intimate parts of her life, but also reflects the true desires of the contemporary China.
This Face was published in 2011 in Hong Kong. Due to the sensitive contents, it is banned from sales in China.
