Wien: Bildkompendium Wiener Aktionismus und Film is probably the most important publication in understanding the Wiener Aktionismus (Viennese Actionism) movement. This black book is a real force. 316 pages packed with photographs, newspaper clippings, documents and texts dealing with practically the entire movement (it continued beyond 1970): a provocative revolution in art and culture, as is the book. The title on the cover is printed in black on black paper. The pages are made with black painted edges. Peter Weibel and coeditor Valie Export created a monumental work for the Vienna Actionism movement, and Weibel even claims to be the inventor of the name. The pervading atmosphere of the book is vibrant and vile, just like the movement itself. 240 pages of photographs and newspaper clippings are followed by four chapters entitled: kommentar (commentary – 28 pages) synopsis (32 pages) texte (auswahl) (text selection –13 pages) and zusätze (extras – 3 pages).
