13 October 1938 – 16 January 2025, was an American photographer known for detailed black-and-white photographs of everyday life and the American landscape. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he began photographing at fourteen after joining the Carteret Camera Club. He briefly studied commercial photography before leaving school at sixteen to work as a darkroom assistant in a Newark portrait studio. A year later he joined the U.S. Navy as a photographer. In 1959, Edward Steichen acquired his photograph of an explosion aboard the USS Wasp for the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

During the following years, he worked as a portrait photographer, helped establish the Witkin Gallery, and increasingly concentrated on personal projects, adopting large-format cameras. In the 1960s he photographed Amish communities in Pennsylvania, producing an extensive documentation of their lives. His work frequently addressed architecture, industrial structures, towns, and landscapes as elements of American culture, with particular attention to his native New Jersey.

His first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Underground Gallery in 1965. In 1972, the Metropolitan Museum of Art presented his exhibition Paterson, New Jersey, and later exhibitions included George Tice: Urban Landscapes at the International Center of Photography in 2002. His photographs are represented in more than 100 museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Books formed an important part of his work. Publications include Fields of Peace (1998), George Tice: Selected Photographs 1953–1999 (2001), Urban Landscapes (2002), and Paterson II (2006), followed by George Tice: Lifework(2021). He received fellowships and grants from organizations including the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
