Born in 1961 in Wolfsburg, is a German photographer and professor at the University of the Arts Bremen. After completing secondary school, he initially studied political science and sociology, followed by communication design with a focus on photography at the University of Essen and at the London College of Printing (now London College of Communication).

Since 1989, his photographic work has been published internationally in magazines and newspapers including GEO(Germany and Korea) and The New York Times. He has been a member of the independent photo agency laif in Cologne since 1994 and has taught photography at the University of the Arts Bremen since 2002.

He gained wider recognition with the exhibition Neon Tigers, which focused on rapidly growing metropolitan regions in Asia. From 2015 onward, he began publishing a series of photobooks conceived as urban diaries, starting with Cairo Diary and followed by volumes on cities including Athens, Taipei, and numerous others. In 2021, further volumes were published as a photographic archive of cities at the beginning of the 21st century, including Linz, Belfast, Dhaka, Minsk, and Yangon.

He has received several awards, including two World Press Photo Awards and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award in 2012. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg.
