Miguel Rio Branco

1946, was a Brazilian photographer, painter, and filmmaker whose work has focused on Brazil and has included photojournalism as well as social and political critique. He was born in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, to diplomat parents and spent his childhood in Portugal, Switzerland, Brazil, and the United States.

He studied in New York City, earning a BA and completing a vocational course at the New York Institute of Photography, before moving in 1978 to Rio de Janeiro, where he studied at the Industrial Design College. In 1980 he became an Associate Member of Magnum Photos. He lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.

His photographs are held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Photobooks form an important part of his practice, notably Silent Book (1997), which is included in The Photobook: A History, Volume II.
