Born July 27, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, is an American photographer widely regarded as a pioneer of artistic color photography. His work played a decisive role in establishing color as a legitimate and autonomous medium within fine-art photography.

Raised in rural Mississippi, he began photographing at an early age and later studied at Vanderbilt University and the University of Mississippi. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he worked primarily in the American South, drawing inspiration from photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Walker Evans. From the mid-1960s onward, William Eggleston increasingly focused on color photography, first using slide film and later color negatives.

His international breakthrough came in 1976 with the exhibition Photographs by William Eggleston at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, curated by John Szarkowski. Although initially met with strong criticism, the exhibition is now considered a turning point in photographic history. The accompanying photobook, William Eggleston’s Guide (1976), has since become one of the most influential photography books of the 20th century and is often cited by Eggleston himself as his most important publication.

Eggleston is known for turning his attention to ordinary, seemingly insignificant subjects—interiors, streets, everyday objects—rendered in saturated color through the dye-transfer printing process. His approach transformed perceptions of color photography and influenced generations of artists, filmmakers, and photographers. His work is held in major international museum collections and continues to shape contemporary photographic practice.
