Born in 1953 in Karlsruhe, is a German photographer, filmmaker, and crime novelist. He is the son of a Ukrainian father and a German mother. In the 1970s, he moved first to Berlin, then to London, and from 1980 lived in New York City, where he worked in various jobs, including as a bouncer at the Danceteria nightclub. During this period, he began exhibiting photographs and producing short films.

His photographic work has consistently focused on social outsiders and marginalized groups. After returning to Berlin in 1995, he traveled repeatedly to Russia and Eastern Europe, producing analog photographs of drug users, homeless people, and other people living on the fringes of society. From 2003 onward, he collaborated with actor Bruno S. on a documentary project and subsequently on the feature film Phantomanie. From this period, he also became active as a writer of crime fiction.

In 2015, his second feature film Back to Nothing was released, starring Birol Ünel. His work has been shown internationally in institutions including Fotomuseum Winterthur, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin, and the Centro Internazionale di Fotografia in Palermo.
