Born 18 May 1883 in Berlin and died 5 July 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts, was a German-American architect and a foundational figure of modern architecture. He is best known as the founder and first director of the Staatliches Bauhaus, an art and design school established in Weimar in 1919 that sought to unify art, craft, and technology into a new, socially engaged approach to creative practice. The Bauhaus became one of the most influential institutions in 20th-century design and architecture, shaping modernist aesthetics and pedagogy worldwide.

After studying architecture in Munich and Berlin, he worked with Peter Behrens alongside architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. In 1919 he was appointed director of the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts and merged it with the School of Fine Arts to found the Bauhaus, serving as its leader until 1928. Under his direction the school championed functionalism, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of design into everyday life.

As an architect, he contributed to early modernist works such as the Fagus Factory, and later, after the Bauhaus was closed under political pressure, he emigrated to the United States. In the U.S. he taught at Harvard University and co-founded The Architects Collaborative (TAC), promoting collaborative practice. His architectural legacy includes both educational structures and residential projects, and his ideas helped define the International Style.
