Born September 5, 1933, in Oak Park, Illinois, is an American photographer best known for his long-term documentary projects and his deeply engaged approach to photographing social realities in the United States.

After beginning to photograph at an early age and winning the Kodak National High School Contest in 1949, Bruce Davidson studied photography and, following military service, worked briefly as a freelance photographer for Life. In 1958 he joined Magnum Photos and became a full member the following year. From early on, his work focused on sustained, immersive projects rather than single assignments.

Davidson gained international recognition with photographic series addressing social and political subjects, including the Civil Rights Movement and The Dwarf. In 1963, these works were presented in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A major turning point came with East 100th Street (1970), the result of two years spent photographing residents of a single block in Spanish Harlem. Widely regarded as a landmark in documentary photography, the book is noted for its collaborative method and the trust established between photographer and subjects.

In later projects, Davidson expanded his approach to new contexts. Subway (1986), his first major color series, portrays the diversity of passengers in the New York City subway system. Subsequent photobooks include Portraits (1999), featuring cultural figures, and Before the Moment – England and Scotland, 1960 (2006), drawn from an extensive travel archive. Davidson’s work has been widely exhibited and published, and his photobooks are considered central to the history of postwar documentary photography.
