August 23, 1920 – March 6, 2013, was a Danish photographer who achieved international recognition for his pioneering abstract color photography. His work played a crucial role in establishing color photography as an autonomous artistic medium in the mid-20th century.

Growing up in Copenhagen, Keld Helmer-Petersen began photographing in the late 1930s and early on engaged with international developments in modernist photography, particularly those associated with the Bauhaus and Neue Sachlichkeit. Influenced by artists such as Albert Renger-Patzsch, he adopted an abstract, formal visual language at an unusually early stage.

His breakthrough came with the photobook 122 Colour Photographs (1948), a bold and influential debut that presented photography as an independent art form through rigorously composed color images of architecture, objects, and urban fragments. The book is now regarded as a landmark in the history of color photography and was later featured prominently in The Photobook: A History by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. In 1949, several of his photographs were published in Life magazine, further establishing his international profile.

In the early 1950s, Helmer-Petersen studied and taught at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where he expanded his practice to include graphic black-and-white work. He later published Fragments of a City (1960), a tightly edited photobook exploring Chicago through abstract urban details. Throughout his career, he continued to experiment across media, producing photograms, films, and later digitally manipulated works.

Alongside his artistic practice, Helmer-Petersen worked extensively as an architectural photographer, collaborating with leading Scandinavian architects and designers. In later decades, his work was rediscovered internationally, leading to new publications, exhibitions, and a comprehensive retrospective monograph in 2007. His contribution remains central to the history of abstract photography and the photobook.
