17 December 1893 – 30 March 1966, was a German theatre director, producer, and pioneering theorist of political and epic theatre. He transformed the stage into a site of social and political engagement by foregrounding documentary content, real-world issues, and multimedia in performance. Piscator’s innovations had a profound influence on modern theatre in both Europe and the United States.

He was born in Greifenstein-Ulm in the German Empire and began his career in the theatre before and after World War I. In Weimar Berlin during the 1920s, he expanded the technical and conceptual possibilities of the stage by integrating film projections, newsreels, elaborate machinery, and scaffolded sets to create what he called political theatre, intended to provoke critical reflection rather than passive emotional immersion. His ideas were central to the development of epic theatre and influenced contemporaries such as Bertolt Brecht.

Piscator founded and directed the Piscator-Bühne and produced large-scale, socially charged productions. With the rise of Nazism, he worked abroad, including in the Soviet Union and France, before emigrating to the United States in 1939. There he established the Dramatic Workshop at The New School for Social Research in New York City, training generations of actors and directors and integrating his approach to political performance into American theatre education. He returned to Germany in the 1950s and later served as director of the Freie Volksbühne in Berlin.

His legacy endures in the persistence of documentary, political, and multimedia elements in contemporary theatre, and in the continued influence of epic theatre as a form that foregrounds social critique and audience engagement.
