Born September 12, 1945, in Newport Beach, California; died November 22, 2014, in Paris, was an American photographer associated with the New Topographics movement, which fundamentally reshaped landscape photography in the 1970s.

Baltz studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating in 1969, and later earned a Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate School in 1979. Between 1970 and 1972, he taught photography at Pomona College and the California Institute of the Arts, and continued to hold teaching positions at American and European institutions for several decades, including the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee and the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice.

His work is known for its restrained, analytical approach to the built environment. Baltz focused on suburban housing developments, industrial parks, and altered landscapes, documenting what might otherwise be considered banal or overlooked. This approach contributed to a new photographic aesthetic that emphasized neutrality, repetition, and distance, often described as an aestheticization of the everyday.

Baltz is frequently described as a topographic photographer due to his innovative treatment of landscape and architecture. Key bodies of work include New Industrial Parks, San Quentin Point, Candlestick Point, and Deaths in Newport. Some of his series are characterized by an extreme minimalist clarity, in which architectural fragments are reduced to near-abstract compositions.

From the late 1980s onward, Baltz lived primarily in Europe, dividing his time between Paris and Venice. During this period, he increasingly worked with large-scale prints and turned his attention to sites shaped by new technologies, producing images that convey a stark, clinical, and often uninhabited atmosphere.
