1955, is a Canadian photographer. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, he began photographing in the early 1970s, focusing on the city’s waterfront and nightlife, with an early interest in artificial light and urban environments. During this period he also travelled to Asia, later living in Tokyo in the late 1970s before relocating to Hong Kong in 1982, where he remained until 1998.

Over more than three decades, his work has examined the social and physical transformations of major cities in Asia. After Hong Kong, he was based in Shanghai from 1998 to 2011, documenting rapid urban change, before returning to Vancouver. His photographs have been published widely in editorial contexts, including Time, Newsweek, Fortune, and The New York Times Magazine, alongside ongoing personal projects.

His photobooks include City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City (1993, with Ian Lambot) and its later expanded edition City of Darkness Revisited (2014), as well as Phantom Shanghai (2007), Hanoi Calling (2010), Under Vancouver 1972–1982 (2017), HK:PM Hong Kong Night Life 1974–1989 (2017), Hotel Okinawa (2017), Tokyo-Yokosuka 1976–1983 (2019), and JAL 76–88 (2022). These publications form a central part of his practice, documenting urban environments and their transitions over time.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
