6 March 1889 – 28 September 1974, was a German geologist, photographer, filmmaker, and film director, and a pioneering figure of the mountain film (Bergfilm). Born in Frankenthal in the Rhine Palatinate, he is regarded—together with cinematographer Sepp Allgeier—as one of the founders of the mountain, ski, and nature film genres, and as the central figure of what became known as the “Freiburg School” of mountain cinema.

Originally trained as a geologist, he brought scientific observation together with technical invention and cinematic experimentation. From the early 1920s onward, he developed a highly distinctive film language centered on extreme landscapes, athletic bodies, and the dynamic interaction between humans and nature. His mountain and ski films of the 1920s achieved wide international popularity and are credited with significantly influencing the later mass development of skiing, alpine sports, and mountain tourism.

His work was marked by innovative camera techniques, daring outdoor cinematography, and new approaches to editing and movement. These methods strongly influenced later filmmakers, most notably Leni Riefenstahl, who adapted both the technical and aesthetic principles developed in his films. Despite his prominence in the Weimar period, his career declined during the National Socialist era, partly due to his distance from the Nazi Party and resulting political marginalization.

Fanck died in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1974. His films remain central to the history of documentary, sports, and nature cinema, and to the development of filmic representations of landscape and physical performance.
