Born February 12, 1857, in Libourne; died August 4, 1927, in Paris, was a French photographer whose work became foundational to the history of documentary and modern photography.

Atget initially pursued a career as an actor with limited success before turning to photography, first as an amateur and later as a profession. His lifelong subject was Paris, the city in which he lived and worked. Around the turn of the 20th century, he began systematically documenting what he described as le vieux Paris—the old city that was rapidly disappearing due to modernization.

Using a large-format camera with 18 × 24 cm glass negatives, Atget created extensive photographic series such as Paris pittoresque and Le vieux Paris. His images catalogued streets, courtyards, shop windows, parks, architecture, workers, prostitutes, and even architectural details such as door handles. Although his equipment was considered outdated even at the time, his methodical approach resulted in a uniquely precise and comprehensive visual archive.

Atget sold his photographs to artists, stage designers, museums, and libraries, earning a modest living but achieving neither sustained financial nor artistic recognition during his lifetime. In 1920, he sold a large part of his archive to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, an act that helped preserve the fragile collection.

Shortly before his death, Atget was introduced by Man Ray to the young photographer Berenice Abbott. After his death, Abbott acquired the remaining archive, published his work in books, and ultimately sold it to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her efforts were crucial in establishing Atget’s posthumous reputation and securing his lasting influence on photography.
