1960, is a British photographer known for long-term projects that combine portraiture, landscape, reportage, and documentary photography. She grew up in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, studied photography, film, and video at the Polytechnic of Central London, and later worked as a teacher and independent photographer. From the late 1990s onward, she spent more than a decade living and working in the Balkans, Turkey, and the Black Sea region, experiences that became central to her photographic practice.

Her work frequently explores themes of borders, identity, memory, history, and belonging. Through extended projects in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and later the United States, she developed a body of work concerned with the relationship between people and place, often examining the effects of historical and social change on everyday life. Working primarily with black-and-white film and natural light, she has employed different formats ranging from handheld 35mm cameras to large-format portrait cameras.

Photobooks have played a central role in her practice. Major publications include Schwarzes Meer (2007), Sweet Nothings (2008), a portrait of schoolgirls in Eastern Anatolia, She Dances on Jackson (2013), based on work made in the American South, And Time Folds (2018), a retrospective survey of projects from the Balkans, Turkey, Georgia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and Snow (2022). Her work has been widely exhibited, including at the Rencontres d’Arles, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, Fundación MAPFRE, and the Barbican Art Gallery.

Winship has received numerous awards, including two World Press Photo Awards, the Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year title, and the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award. In 2018 she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society. She is a member of Agence VU.
