Born in 1972 (Japanese: 川内 倫子), is a Japanese photographer known for a serene, poetic visual language that finds meaning in fleeting, everyday moments. Her work emphasizes intimacy, impermanence, and the quiet presence of life, often unfolding through carefully sequenced photobooks.

After studying graphic design and photography at Seian University of Art and Design, Rinko Kawauchi began her career in commercial photography before moving into fine art practice. Design training strongly informed her approach to editing and sequencing, and she has consistently treated photographs as parts of larger series rather than isolated images. She works primarily with a Rolleiflex 6×6 camera, favoring square compositions and soft, luminous color.

Her international breakthrough came in 2001 with the simultaneous publication of three photobooks—Utatane, Hanabi, and Hanako—which established her reputation and later received major awards in Japan. Subsequent books such as Aila(2004), Cui Cui (2005), Murmuration (2010), Illuminance (2011), and Ametsuchi explore themes of memory, family, ritual, and the cycles of nature. Photobooks remain central to her practice, allowing viewers an intimate, contemplative engagement with her images.

Rooted in Shinto beliefs, her work treats all subjects—no matter how small or ordinary—as spiritually significant. In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include digital photography and non-square formats while continuing to explore rituals, landscapes, and transformations. She lived for many years in Tokyo and moved to the countryside on the outskirts of the city in 2018.
