"Araki studied film and photography at Chiba University from 1959 to 1963. At the time, his approach to the medium was still strongly influenced by the filmmakers of Italian Neorealism. In 1964, he won the first photo competition of Taiyo magazine with a few black-and-white still photographs from his graduation film project Satchin.
