"In 1933, the publishing house Arts et Métiers Graphiques in Paris released a series of young nude women by Cami and Sasha Stone (with individual credit given only to Sasha Stone), based on the original portfolio format of 20 Femmes. That same year, at the Maison d’Art in Brussels, under the direction of Charles Leirens, Stone presented a full exhibition of photographs taken on the same theme. This part of their work appears to have particularly delighted the art press of the time. Numerous critics praised the aesthetic and formal qualities of the images.
One Belgian journalist, writing in Les Beaux-Arts, Bulletin de la Vie Artistique, underlined the artist’s skill, noting the “permanent and perfect results” and adding that Mme Stone’s work possessed “nothing too feminine in it to achieve these luminous and epic nudes that happily rival Sasha Stone’s work.” The sexist nature of this comparison between the two is striking.
In fact, it is interesting to observe the artistic value of Cami and to consider her photography in contrast with Sasha’s. Sasha Stone’s images are constructed, photographed from specific angles, sometimes producing distortions. They play with shadow and light to emphasize the sculptural volumes of the bodies, recalling Sasha’s original training as a sculptor. While he selected models “from life,” Cami Stone stated that she worked exclusively with professional models according to established norms.
Other editions of the current portfolio exist, including a series published by Arts et Métiers Graphiques. Notably, in the 1950s, Cami produced a reissue of the entire set, which she sold in her photography shop in Brussels." (Musée de la Photographie Charleroi)
