André Kertész - Day of Paris, J.J. Augustin, 1945, New York
Hardcover with dust jacket, design by Brodovitch, text by George Davis.
"Day of Paris is not the first book to feature his Parisian photographs, but thanks to its elegant design - credited jointly to Brodovitch and Peter Pollack - it is the most fully realized. It loosely follows a familiar scenario, a 'day in the life' of Paris, beginning with the gargoyles of Notre Dame and giving us a photographic modernist's tour of the city, nodding appreciatively at Henri Cartier-Bresson along the way, and ending up with Brassai in a series of nocturnal views. ... The keynote of the book is elegance. The Brodovitch/ Pollack design, a long way away from Brodovitch's Ballet, exemplifies this, its restraint matching the innate conservatism of Kertész's approach. Although he is frequently hailed as a founder of the humanist documentary approach, this book would seem to indicate that Kertész was more interested in patterns than people."
