Shomei Tomatsu & Ken Domon - Hiroshima-Nagasaki Document 1961 (東松 照明, 土門拳), Japan Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, 1961, Tokyo
Hardcover, cloth bound in cardboard slipcase, including a booklet. With texts by Hideki Yukawa, Kiyoshi Sakuma, Nobuo Kusano, Ryusei Hasegawa and Toshio Hata. Design by Kiyoshi Awazu, Kohei Sugiura and Kazunobu Shimura.
“This book–along with Ken Domon’s Hiroshima (1958), Kikuji Kawada’s The Map (1965) and Tomatsu’s 11.02 Nagasaki (1966), represents one of the most significant attempts on the part of photographers to memorialize the horror of the 1945 atomic bomb blasts. As Parr and Badger point out, they also mark a progression from a more "sober and didactic tone” to one that is “more symbolic [and] emotive”. Published under the auspices of The Japan Council Against the A and H Bombs, this book comes much closer–in feel at least–to an ‘official’ history than the two books that followed. Many of the photos contained here were reproduced in Tomatsu’s 11.02 Nagasaki, but to very different effect.“ (photoeye)
“The record of man's striving and suffering cannot but evoke human feeling. Emotion can destroy; but it can also illuminate thought and nourish useful action. The purpose of this book is to arouse in its reader such emotions as will guide and encourage them in their efforts for peaceful progress toward those goals to which we all aspire.” Weighty, shadowy photos with plenty of black to stir the spirit. There is an unexpected amount of provocative Christian imagery, rosaries, crucifixes, graves, and the ruins of Murakami cathedral, but one is left feeling uncertain if this is a direct attack or simply a record. And if the images are not enough, the accompanying booklet makes for uncomfortable reading. The argument that the bombs shortened the war and saved American lives is clearly simplistic. Characteristically, any mention of the Japanese aggression is absent". (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
