Pieter Hugo
Born in 1976 in Johannesburg, is a South African photographer primarily working in portraiture and based in Cape Town. His practice is rooted in a self-taught approach and is closely associated with a post-Apartheid generation of photographers examining the historical and contemporary representation of marginalized and disempowered communities.
After beginning his career in the film industry in Cape Town, he undertook a two-year residency at the Fabrica research centre in Treviso, Italy. His work often centers on carefully staged portraits that confront established visual conventions and challenge assumptions around visibility, difference, and power. Early projects such as Looking Aside (2006) focus on individuals whose appearances are commonly subject to avoidance, photographed in controlled studio settings.
The photobook is a central format in his practice. His monographs include The Hyena & Other Men (2008), Selected Works (2009), This Must Be the Place (2012), and Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (2017). Subsequent series such as Permanent Error (2011), There Is a Place in Hell for Me and My Friends (2012), Kin (2014), and 1994 (2017) engage with themes of colonial legacy, identity, surveillance, and social fracture across Africa and beyond.
