16 December 1895 – 6 August 1940, was a photographer born in Saint Petersburg as Alexander Sergeyevich Steinsapir. After emigrating first to Poland and then to the United States, he studied sculpture in Paris and Berlin, where he became associated with Dadaist circles. From 1924 onward, he established himself in Berlin with his own photographic studio, Atelier Stone, working as a photographer and collage artist.

He maintained a close friendship with Walter Benjamin, for whose book One-Way Street (Einbahnstraße) he designed the cover, and also worked for Erwin Piscator’s experimental theater. In 1931, he moved with his wife Cami to Brussels, where he continued to run a photographic studio. In 1939, he married the Dutch artist Lydia Edens.

Following the German invasion in 1940, he fled to southern France with the intention of emigrating to the United States. Due to bureaucratic obstacles, he was unable to leave and remained in Villelongue-de-la-Salanque. He died later that year after a serious illness in a hospital in Perpignan.
