Olivia Arthur
Josef Chladek, June 2015, Vienna PhotoBook Festival

Born 1980 in London, is a British photojournalist and a member of the Magnum Photos agency. She is known for her long-term documentary projects that explore communities and environments usually inaccessible to outsiders, with a particular sensitivity to issues of gender, privacy, and cultural boundaries.

Arthur initially studied mathematics at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2002, before completing a diploma in photojournalism at the London College of Printing in 2003. She then began working as a freelance photojournalist. Early in her career, she traveled extensively, often living in a tent, and gained recognition for projects that required long-term immersion and trust.

She attracted international attention with her work on women in Saudi Arabia, photographing their domestic lives under conditions that did not allow them to be shown unveiled. These photographs formed the basis of her first book, Jeddah Diary (2012), which offers an intimate view of life shaped by strict social rules. Arthur also spent two and a half years in India, where she photographed members of marginalized communities, producing numerous portrait studies.

Arthur became a member of Magnum Photos in 2008. Her work is held in public collections including the Musée de l’Elysée (now Photo Elysée) in Vevey, Switzerland, and the National Media Museum in Bradford, United Kingdom.
