"At the book's core is a portrait gallery of celebrities, including Dwight D Eisenhower, Allen Ginsberg, Arthur Miller, Marilyn Monroe, George Wallace, Malcolm X Billy Graham, Bertrand Russell and Major Claude Eath-erly (Hiroshima pilot). Such names confirm the book's historical themes, Civil Rights and the Bomb, locating it firmly in the 1950s. Though published in 1964, there is not a sign of JFK or the New Camelot. ... But elsewhere all is bitterness. Marilyn is transformed into a world-weary, glassy eyed waif; there's a reptilian Eisenhower, a sneering Wallace, a phantas-mogoric Malcolm X, a naked, hirsute Ginsberg, and fearsome Daughters of the American Revolution. Avedon begins the book with an image of a woman building castles in the sand, followed by a series of wedding gatherings. He ends in the mental institution. In between is his celebrity rogues' gallery, in which it is difficult to separate heroes from villains. Is he trying to tell us some-thing?
