Born 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is an American photographer best known for his large-scale photographic projects focused on the American Midwest. He is a member of the Magnum Photos agency.

Life and Work

Soth studied at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York. He received fellowships from the McKnight Foundation and the Jerome Foundation and was awarded the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2003. In 2004, he participated in the Whitney Biennial and published his first photobook, followed by several others in the subsequent years. Many of Soth’s photographs are made using an 8×10 large-format camera.

He was nominated for membership in Magnum Photos in 2004 and became a full member in 2008. His photographs have been exhibited internationally and are held in the collections of numerous museums.

Soth lives in Minneapolis with his wife and children. In 2010, he founded the independent publishing house Little Brown Mushroom. His surname is pronounced like the English word “both.”
