Born 2 May 1904 – 20 December 1983, was a British photographer and photojournalist of German birth who became one of the most important and influential figures in 20th-century photography. Born Hermann Wilhelm Brandt in Hamburg, he grew up during World War I and later disowned his German heritage, settling permanently in England and focusing his practice there.

After early treatment for tuberculosis in Switzerland, he spent time in Paris working briefly with Man Ray, where he absorbed Surrealist influences and experimental techniques such as extreme grain and radical cropping. In 1933 he moved to London and began documenting all levels of British society, producing seminal photo-essays on class and everyday life. His early books The English at Home (1936) and A Night in London (1938) combined social documentary with formal innovation, capturing both public ritual and private spaces with deep psychological insight.

During World War II, he worked for the British Home Office, recording scenes such as Londoners in underground bomb shelters during the Blitz, and he continued to develop his range into portraiture and landscape after the war. From the mid-1940s onward he became especially known for his series of nudes, notably Perspective of Nudes (1961), in which wide-angle lenses and distorted forms transformed the human figure into sculptural, almost abstract shapes.

Brandt participated in major exhibitions during and after his lifetime and his work remains widely exhibited in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His photographs are characterized by dramatic use of light and shadow, expressive composition, and an ability to bridge documentary immediacy with avant-garde sensibility. He was posthumously inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame in 1984.
