Yutaka Takanashi
6 February 1935 – (Japanese: 高梨 豊), is a Japanese photographer best known for his sustained engagement with Tokyo, photographing fashion, urban design, and everyday city life. He was born in Shirogane-chō, Ushigome-ku (now Shinjuku), Tokyo, and studied photography at Nihon University, graduating in 1957.
After early recognition through awards from Sankei Camera magazine, he worked in commercial photography and design contexts, including a long period at Nippon Design Center from 1961 to 1970. During this time, he developed a photographic language attentive to the surface, structure, and atmosphere of the modern city. In the early 1960s, he presented the series Somethin’ Else in solo exhibitions, featuring frontal views of buildings made with a large-format camera.
He was a key participant in the influential photography magazine Provoke in 1968 and 1969, contributing to a critical rethinking of photographic expression in postwar Japan. From 1980 to 2000, he held a teaching position at Tokyo Zokei University, becoming a full professor in 1983. From 1992 onward, he collaborated with Genpei Akasegawa and Yūtokutaishi Akiyama in the group Raika Dōmei.
He received the Annual Award of the Photographic Society of Japan in 1984 and 1993.
