In March 2017, when her 18-year-old son, Tomeu, tragically died from an overdose, Anna Galí made the shocking discovery of a side of his life he had been sharing on social media but hiding from her. Tomeu, a biomedical engineering student, shared his experiences with drugs on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.
To cope, she hacked his devices in search of traces of his hidden existence, and using different sources (images made by herself, family archive, digital appropriation, texts, personal documents, screenshots) pieces together his double life to reconstruct his life story. This double life between reality and virtuality lies at the heart of Time on Quaaludes and Red Wine, awarded the Images Vevey Book Award Special Jury Prize 2023/24.
Gali's work raises awareness about the vulnerability of youth in today's digital world.
