Natalia Baluta - Потом / after a while, Self published, 2014, Moscow
Hardcover, edition of 500 numbered and signed copies, on the UNSEEN dummy award short list 2014.
"For 15 years I have been doing future forecasting for a multinational corporation. We have a joke that this job is half science, half magic. And my favorite part of the job is eureka moment, the flash, when different facts and elements, carefully chosen and put together, help to make a jump, which seems to be a magic.
I started this project as analytical exercise in order to explore and understand similarities between photographic medium and futurology, to apply proven scientific approaches in photography and vice versa. My own life became a material for my research, for almost a year I was exploring, meditating and experimenting with the future and by now it is no longer scientific or magical category to me, I now perceive future as part of my inner self. I am trying to envision the future with help of photography; it is emerging gradually, appearing through the present. Photography helps revealing future from the present, thoroughly gazing into the reality, which is not doable with science or human eye. It seems that future cannot appear in the photograph. However, creating photographs is a broader process than just pressing the shutter. Photograph will not exist without the viewer, it will be empty, as if it is a white sheet, till the moment when the viewer will see it and endue it with the meaning.
I am keep having same nightmare since my early childhood – huge wave, which came from the horizon and is about to fall down onto me, but I am always waking up in this very moment. Previously, I was never scared to think about the future, it seemed, it only brings new opportunities. But exploring my everyday life, objects that surround me day after day, places, people, I began feeling that fear from my nightmare. Future is pressing down the present moment; it is rolling like a tsunami. But, as in my nightmare, it will never fall down onto us, as we are always protected by the thin substance of the present. And I doubt if future possesses any power and meaning of its own. Are we, the ones expecting the future, endowing it with the power?" (Natalia Baluta)
