31 March 1961, is an American photographer. Born in Manhattan, New York City, he was raised in the Boston suburbs of Cambridge and Newton before moving to the Midwest. At the age of twenty-one he began studying photography at the Yale School of Art, leaving the MFA program after one semester. In 1983 he moved to Los Angeles, where he sought out and befriended photographer Garry Winogrand. He later settled in Athens, Georgia.

Steinmetz is known for black-and-white photographs depicting everyday life and people within the landscapes they inhabit. Working primarily with medium-format film, he has consistently developed and printed his work in his own darkroom since the mid-1980s. His photographs combine spontaneous portraits with candid scenes, as well as images of animals and still lifes, often made while walking through cities or observing everyday activities such as youth sports or summer camps.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including in a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1993–94), and solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and Fotohof in Salzburg. He has published numerous photobooks, including South Central (2007), South East(2008), Greater Atlanta (2009), Philip and Micheline (2010), Italia: Cronaca di un Amore (2010), and Chicago (2025). His photographs are held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
