In February 2020, Alex Majoli was in Reggio Emilia, where he was working with the Fondazione I Teatri. His intention was to add a new chapter to his project Scene, a long piece of research through images about the theatricality of everyday life. While he was finding ways to dig even further into the subject, the pandemic began to enter his photos, his subjects gradually turning into masked figures, the six o’clock dispatch of the growing death toll on national television; the epidemic, a distant threat at first, was now approaching Reggio Emilia.
On March 8th, everything came to a stand-still, the theatre closed, so Majoli and his assistant left for a trip that would take them from the deep south to the northern mountains of Italy to document a contemporary tragedy. After more than a year on hold, and despite the continuing health crisis, he decided to resume work together with I Teatri. The resulting book is no longer just about photography, but an open paragraph about COVID.
With SCENE, Alex Majoli has generated new interpretations about the relationship between men and their daily theatricality. In Opera Aperta, the author takes up the previously developed discourse and explores the ambiguity between reality and fiction. According to David Campany, "The arrival of a stranger is always theatrical, not least because it throws into question our presumptions and aspirations" - Majoli arrives, and while waiting, he builds a stage where he welcomes and puts the characters in relation, actors of themselves in search of the plot of their lives.
