"As a retrospective, however The Lines of My Hand is as good as it gets. It might be argued that the problem with any project of this nature is that it takes bodies of work out of their original context and fails to give them much of a new one, except that of an artistic persona which is usually less interesting than the work itself. Since Frank has had less of a career in any conventional sense and more of a succession of reworkings of the legend, this objection is removed. And since he is its primary subject the diaristic, confessional mode of the book is the ideal showcase. Given the bonus of Sugiura's design talents and the sheer appropriateness of Frank's vision to the Japanese treatment, he might have been the first foreign photographer to gain membership to Provoke had he not retired. The Motomura edition of Lines is certainly one of the photobooks most sought by collectors.
