Arseny Kosterin - Waiting for the Rain / В ожидании дождя, Self published, 2014, Moscow
Softcover, first edition of 10 copies, signed, design and texts by Arseny Kosterin
The story about the waiting, where the rain is used as a metaphor for the uncertainty, and equally as a metaphor for love. Strange romantic world, shown through the monocle lens. In this project, shoot for a year and a half, I want to show how the routine can be transformed through the eyes of beholder. This book is about how the resulting image turns reality into fiction and how reality is impossible without fixing it.
Shoot in January 2012 - July 2013, DSLR, monocle lens. All distortions in images are optical only.
Translation of the foreword:
I photograph to realize that I do exist.
I cut those pieces of reality that I want to arrogate to myself and fold it into a box like children's treasure. Then to reassemble my own universe with these pieces. I like to possess them, and I like the way the image that I get in the end, changes the realiry. As it turns reality into fiction. I want to enter to a picture and stay in it. As sometimes you want to a good dream did not end as long as possible.
And I'm waiting for the rain. Rain is one of the few things that you can’t see in a dream. I feel good, when it is raining, in such moments I’m feeling like home wherever I was. Rain connects me with reality and returns me from my dreams. Rain is like love, both of them can not be controlled, it always comes unexpectedly and changes the world.
One day I was riding in the bus with the windows fogged from the rain, I was reading a book. When I looked up from the page with text, to see at what point of the route I was, my view rested against turbid world behind the bus window, and a for a few seconds I could not understand where I am. I thought I was going crazy and that I was in one of my pictures.
I do not want to sleep any more.
I photograph, therefore I am.
