Filipe Casaca - Blue Mud Swamp, Self published, 2012, Lisboa
Blue Mud Swamp is a fascinating and well produced body of work. As the title suggests, the tone and even more the mood of the photographs is on the darker side. Even if we are told that the place (Dalian, China) is "one of the best cities to live in China", Filipe leads us to places and focuses on spots that document the downside of the development. Pictures of "borders" between the beautiful life and the run-down sites, living side by side and hidden in the dark. The pictures work so intensely on you that you can't imagine the sun shining there at any time, you're even happy when a greenish-yellow appears in his photos. Depressive and impressive book!
