Next to Feldmann, Ruscha is a galloping expressionst. Of all collections in this vein – and it is a popular genre of artists’ books – Feldmann’s are the most deadpan, the least expressive. […] John Szarkowski once divided photographs into two primary categories – windows, which look out at the world, and mirrors, which reflect back the photographer, or the viewer. In the ›Bilder‹ books Feldmann is essentially saying that all photographers are mirrors, and only tell us what we want to know« (Parr/Badger).
