Sune Jonsson - Byn med det blå huset, Nordisk rotogravyr, 1959, Stockholm
Hardcover with dust jacket. (The Village with the Blue House)
Indeed, in Byn med det bla huset (The Village with the Blue House), the relationship is more symbiotic than most, for writer and photographer are one and the same. This is often a recipe for failure, but here it is a complete success; Jonsson proves himself to be highly accomplished in both fields. A prolific and renowned figure in Sweden, he has made a study of his home town, which is in the farnorth of the country, in the district of Västerbotten. This was a village of 304 souls when he began to photograph, but only 299 when he finished. As might be expected from an insider's view, his vision is warm and sympathetic, full of sentiment yet without sentimentality. His photographs are like his text, simple, elegant, but profound, printed in a beautiful soft grey gravure. His eye for composition and tonalities may be compared to that of W Eugene Smith, but without Smith's unfortunate tendency to lay on the schmaltz with a trowel.
