Jens Olof Lasthein - Home Among Black Hills, Journal, 2014, Stockholm
Hardcover with dustjacket. Text by Jens Olof Lasthein, Manolo Calvo, Samir Nya (English, Swedish, French, Korean), design by Patric Leo. Edition of 1,000 copies.
I came to Charleroi for the first time in 2010 and saw its silhouettes through misty car windows driving on the elevated roads. I walked the streets and I listened to stories about The Black Country, the land of coal mines, and The Red City, referring to the glow of the former steel industries working night and day, and somehow I got intrigued. Now I have returned to spend more time, learning about life in the city now and before, about the waves of immigration of miners from southern Europe, northern Africa and elsewhere, about the vibrating city life when there was work enough for everybody, about the depression following the closing of mines and industries, everything adding up to the spirit I find here. And I am seduced by the raw beauty of the city and by the people, knowing how to share, give you attention and respect each other. These last years, the city has undergone big changes, and people are discussing, often worrying, what the new times are going to bring. It is no secret that there is an official attempt to change the image of Charleroi. By creating a city of shining surfaces and expensive rents the aim is to attract wealthy newcomers and prosperous companies. Hopefully the city planners also include the citizens already living here - those who are the bearers of the unique and truly international spirit of Charleroi. (J.O. Lasthein)
