"Life has recently gone out, abruptly, of all these empty rooms, their walls frequently dirty or worn, sometimes containing bags full of assorted belongings and abandoned food remains. What we know and what we can sense through these images is highly disturbing. There barely remain a few more or less tidy or untidy traces. They are no longer anybody’s booty, there no longer appears to be much that can be salvaged. They barely conceal the total emptiness that is evident in other photographs. It is a well known fact that a voice in an empty house has a special ring to it, as if amplifying the absence. Light, too, spreads over the walls as if to say that there no longer remains anything resembling life, illuminating rooms that always end up looking too pale, like the terminally ill patient whose pulse is dying down."
