Foreword:
General knowledge of social and economic conditions is today recognized as just as necessary as, at the end of the nineteenth century, the dissemination of technical knowledge, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the dissemination of hygienic knowledge. Planned organization of the entire order of life, systematic utilization of existing forces, is an effect of modern social engineering, which finds ever stronger expression in giant organizations of both private and public character.
The present pictorial-statistical elementary work
“Society and Economy”
is the first systematic attempt, on the basis of careful processing and interlinking of existing data and combinations of every kind, to present to the eye a colorful picture of today’s human civilization and its development.
Whoever, for example, wishes to understand the significance of international trade relations, colonial economy, migration, the modern economic associations of America and Europe, the position of the Soviet Union within the framework of total world production and total world consumption, within the framework of the great social transformation; whoever wishes, for example, to know which empires outside Europe have played a role in the course of history, how far their way of life was related to ours; whoever wishes to know what the Persian Empire was with which the Greeks were engaged in struggle, where the economic center of gravity lay in the Middle Ages — to such readers these colorful plates provide, in an impressive manner, an initial clarification.
What the display plates offer as a simplified, vivid picture is further elaborated and supplemented by text and tables. The pictorial section remains the main element. In the spirit of Comenius, it aims to be the beginning of a new Orbis pictus.
The unity of conceptual presentation requires unity of visual representation. Plate can be compared with plate, and through comparison new interrelations are revealed which a single plate could not show. In the design of each individual plate, consideration was always given to the whole: where the same subject is depicted, the same symbol has been used; essential deviations in form signify deviations in content.
The colors, which are rarely to be understood in a naturalistic or plastically realistic sense, but rather generally symbolically, are assigned specific meanings. However, in different contexts the same color must take on different meanings, since only a limited number of colors is available. On the maps, where possible, specific countries were assigned specific colors.
In the arrangement of countries in pictorial statistics, which in themselves allow free design, a uniform order was sought in the interest of faster orientation. As the optical principle of order, geographical position was chosen: from north to south, from west to east.
The uniformity of the plates is based on the “Vienna Method”, systematically developed by the Social and Economic Museum in Vienna. It makes quantitative relationships visually comprehensible by consistently applying the principle that a larger quantity of objects is represented by a larger number of symbols. One symbol always represents a fixed quantity. Any quantity can be approximately visualized through repetition of the symbol.
In order to make everything essential memorable, many details must be omitted. Remembering simplified quantitative images is better than forgetting precise numbers. A new pictorial script is being formed, which is not only uniform and exact, but also attractive and pleasing in its symbols and arrangements.
The portfolio “Society and Economy” was created through long collaboration among a number of scholars, artists, and educators — the staff of the Social and Economic Museum in Vienna. This popular-education and research institute for social enlightenment maintains a technical office for the production of teaching aids and exhibition material. It carries out educational work through museums, exhibitions, slide and film lectures, and illustrated publications. Affiliated with it is the International Archive for Visual Pedagogy.
In order to initiate the publication of further plate works, which will be equipped with illustrations of every kind, the Social and Economic Museum in Vienna, together with the Mundaneum in Brussels, acting on behalf of the Congress of the World Federation of Pedagogical Associations in Geneva in 1929, founded the Orbis Institute.
Its task is, on the one hand, to prepare the International Civilization Atlas (Orbis), and on the other hand to create exhibitions and museums which, as components of a world museum (Mundaneum), are intended to bring the peoples of the world closer to one another.
The Social and Economic Museum requests suggestions that may serve the improvement, expansion, and continuation of its work.
Special thanks are due to the working collective of the museum, upon whose intensive cooperation the success rests, as well as to the publisher, who spared no effort, despite difficult times, to reproduce the pictorial and text plates with the greatest care.
