Stefano Reboli - Jhochhen Tole/Daśãi, Self published, 2018, Milano
Stamp numbered/hand bound/accordion+Pamphlet stitch binding, edition of 100.
These two photo series share the same place and its spiritual nature. The first investigates the aesthetics of psychedelic visions, the second frames the bloody side of religious rituals.
Jhochhen Tole
Kathmandu has been in the 70's one of the ultimate destinations on the Hippie trail. Around Jhochhen Tole a bunch of western travellers established a small community known as Freak Street, that quickly became famous as a place to find enlightenment. They made use of drugs claiming its mystical power to expand consciousness. I took a trip to Kathmandu to capture the vanished essence of this place, today a popular tourist attraction. These in-camera double exposures photographs are inspired by the altered states of mind of a psychedelic experience.
Daśãin
In the Kathmandu Valley after the monsoon season, in a peaceful holiday atmosphere, litres of fresh blood are splattered all over. Daśãin festival represents the most auspicious time of the year. People celebrate the victory of Good over Evil with animal sacrifices. They bring good luck and provide plenty of food for the traditional annual family reunions. The colour photographs show the consistency of the flesh while the surrounding life is portrayed in black and white.
