When Jupiter moves into Aquarius millions of people gather around the Ganges to attend the Kumbh Mela. It is a festival where religious and secular meet. Ritual dips, ceremonies, celebrations, fairs and spectacles are staged for weeks along the riverbanks. While bathing in the river is believed to cleanse ones’ souls of sins, most pilgrims come for Darshan – observing. In Hinduism the experience of beholding deities, revered people and sacred objects results in the viewers receiving a blessing. Images of gods, shrines and objects of veneration, gurus and sadhus are available to pilgrims for a reciprocal spiritual exchange. As an act of worship I framed this overwhelmingly intense happening looking for my share of enlightenment in the worldly and the mystical.
