Klaus Pichler - Skeletons in the Closet, Self published, 2013, Wien
This is Klaus' second book (the first one on tattoos will be online here soon) and although I loved the one about prisoners showing their "art", this one is superior - in concept and quality. We see stuffed animals in the Natural History Museum Vienna, not in the usual show-rooms but hidden, forgotten or just waiting for replacement. Funny enough Klaus didn't arrange or orchestrate the scenery - he was there as a silent visitor depicting things and arrangements as he found them. Silent sceanrios, sometimes scary, sometimes sad, always with a perfect sense for the composition and with a lot of humour. Puts me back in memory to school when I had the job to get stuffed animals for the biology lesson and I had to fetch them from similar "places". The simple, but appealing production of the book makes an overall great publication.
Or in Klaus own words:
'Skeletons in the Closet' features a selection of photographs from the backstage areas of the Natural History Museum Vienna, including storage rooms, basements and depots. The non-staged photographs of the book focus on the random interactions between the stored exhibits amongst each other or the surrounding spaces. 'Skeletons in the Closet' is a collection of sometimes absurd sceneries and strange still lives, accompanied by written reflections on the bloody past of natural history museums.
