Toshitsugu Yamawaki - Dual I, Studio a la page, 2013, Tokyo
Private hand-made publication, hardcover, limited edition of 100, signed. Dual 1&2 arrived second at the Kassel photobook award just one vote behind the "PIGS" by Carlos Spottorno.
This book was fully conceived and produced by the author. This handmade production is incredible: The cover is built out of a kind of cardboard painted white. The binding is also handmade. The pages are sewn together and glued to the binding. The printing process is fantastic: it is a digital process print on a special Japanese paper (the pages are double). When you look at your shelves, it doesn‘t just look like any other book. DUAL I & II show an opposition between two pictures; as a diptych, you are simply impressed at first glance by each picture, but when you begin to find the associations between them, you are really stunned. Because the author uses a lot of different visual codes (form, color, position, dream) to create this duality, he in fact wants the pictures to exist in a complementary manner. These images result from some 30 years of travel and photography, collected and gathered as a real image-bank that everybody has in their own memory. This book could be a nice tool for students who want to learn about layout, or just to train their eye. (Clément Kauter, Le Plac' Art)
