Masahisa Fukase - Yugi (Homo Ludence) (深瀬 昌久 遊戯 映像の現代4), Chuo-koron-sha, 1971, Tokyo

 

Hardcover, with dust jacket and obi and acetate jacket, text in Japanes and English.

Fukase was originally a commercial photographer. He worked for a small company where I imagine his photography assignments were not overly interesting. But Fukase is neither haughty nor a complainer, and he never voiced a word of dissatisfaction.

I am certain the only thought he would have had while working back then was to complete his assignment to the best of his ability. Even as a beginner he liked photography that requires finesse, patience and technical competence.

It is hard to say what motivated Fukase to turn professional. May be love; may be frustration. At any rate, he felt a strong urge to discover what it meant "to take pictures myself." His urge resulted in his pointing his camera at himself.

Generally speaking, modern formativism has greatly influenced most photography and accounts for its "reportage" quality. That type of photography emphasizes the cameraman's viewing rather than viewed position. In sharp contrast, for the last decade Fukase has stressed photographic reality by revealing himself physically and metaphysically. He is called Japan's "autobiographic photographer." 

One should also mention that Fukase, who chooses to exprese himself in darkness, has a much sunnier disposition than the average Japanese.
