Pussy Magazine #1, #2, #3, my latest bookwork, is about the social invisibility of the female of a certain age, and it comes in the shape of the first three issues of a spoof fashion magazine, a work-in-progress on style tips for the invisible woman aged 40+ or, heaven forbid, even older than that. Each issue is centred around a different aspect of the topic. #1 - Cool & Bitchy@Workplace - is about women working in male-dominated power structures. With #2 - Pussy’s Portfolio: So Many Shapes of Pink - the idea was to give all the hopefuls out there hands-on inspiration in order to help them further their own modelling careers and brands. It is designed with very little text and in a more rose-tinted and girlish way than the other two, which are representing the publisher’s black-and-colour house style. #3 - Pussy Goes to Hollywood - is about work in the movie industry; in other words, in Weinstein country.
I started this project way before the #metoo discussion started but it is obviously fed by similar concerns. So this bookwork is about a serious issue that could be treated in a very serious way but this is not how I prefer to work. Being as non-didactic, light-handed and downright silly as possible, my approach is playful verging on the absurd. I want to explore an area where politics, beauty and comedy freely interact. Pussy Magazine is also another example of my deep interest in and fascination with the effects that image and text can have on each other when they are played properly.
Pussy Magazine is also a tribute to the female super ager, to the female unperturbed by the male gaze and, last but not least, to my very own, very talented and completely undaunted supermodel.
